Who you are dealing with
SharedExpense is operated by Sumith Rajagopalan. Using the app means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use it.
What the service is
SharedExpense records expenses you enter and presents them back to you as totals, trends and breakdowns, including spreading a bill across the months it covers. That is the whole of it.
It is specifically not any of the following:
- Not financial, tax, accounting or legal advice. The figures are arithmetic performed on your own entries. Decisions you make from them are yours.
- Not a settlement tool. There are no balances between people and no way to record that a debt was paid. It answers what a group spent, not what anyone owes.
- Not connected to any bank or payment provider. Nothing is imported and no money moves. Every figure is one you typed.
- Not a system of record. Do not rely on it as your only copy of anything you would be sorry to lose, and do not rely on it for a tax return or any other filing without checking it against source documents.
Your account
You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details secure and for what happens under your account. Tell us promptly if you think someone else has access to it.
Accounts are for people aged 18 or over. One person, one account — do not share credentials; add the other person to a group instead, which is what groups are for.
What you enter, and its accuracy
You own what you record and you are responsible for its accuracy. The app performs no verification of any kind: it cannot know whether an amount is right, whether a date is correct, or whether an expense happened at all.
Amounts are recorded in the currency of the account that paid, and reports show one currency at a time. No conversion is performed between currencies, so do not read a total as covering spending recorded in another one.
Groups and other people
Anything you record against a group is visible to the members of that group, and stays in the group’s history if you later leave. Only put information in a group if you are content for its members to keep seeing it.
When you invite someone by email you are confirming you have a reason to contact them at that address. Do not use invitations to send unsolicited mail.
Do not record other people’s personal information in a way they have not agreed to. A group is a shared record, not a private note.
Acceptable use
Do not attempt to access data belonging to other users, disrupt the service, probe or circumvent its security, or use it to store unlawful content. Automated bulk use that degrades the service for others is not permitted.
Availability and changes
The service is provided on a best-effort basis with no guaranteed availability. It may be changed, interrupted or discontinued at any time, and features may be added or removed. It is in active development.
Offline support is likewise best effort. Expenses recorded without a connection are held on your device until it can reach the server; if you clear your browser storage or lose the device before that happens, those entries are gone.
Cost
SharedExpense is free to use and there is no paid tier. If that changes, existing users will be told before any charge applies.
Ending your use
You may stop using the service at any time and ask for your account to be removed, as described in the privacy policy. We may suspend or remove an account that breaches these terms or that is being used to harm other users or the service.
Disclaimers and liability
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including as to accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted operation.
To the extent permitted by law, Sumith Rajagopalan is not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, nor for lost data, lost profits, or decisions taken on the basis of figures shown in the app. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of India have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
Changes to these terms
These terms may change as the app develops. The date at the top will change when they do, and continuing to use the service after that means accepting the revised terms.
